About the Server
What is ΣΤΟΙΧΕΙΟΝ?
It is a generalized preprint archive. It offers a place where works may be submitted, read, circulated, and tested without being prematurely reduced to either:
-
a type of writing that is ready-made for publication by effacing the traces of a work, or
-
a type of writing that has been standardized in an academic discipline or marketplace of knowledge.
A university discourse would call this place for the intersection of disciplines and fields interdisciplinary research, whereas we simply call it a place of structure where the primary focus is on the ΣΤΟΙΧΕΙΟΝ.
To submit a preprint to this site, read the authors' guidelines and endorsement procedures.
What does ΣΤΟΙΧΕΙΟΝ mean?
In Greek, ΣΤΟΙΧΕΙΟΝ (stoicheion) means a letter, element, note, principle, atom, or the minimal unit of analysis from which something else takes shape. A ΣΤΟΙΧΕΙΟΝ need not be a discrete minimal unit, but can be an indiscrete signifier, trait, wave, glyph, or scribble that is readable, but not yet writable in an ordered sequence, system, or alphabet.
Why it exists
The site began with a dissatisfaction: in today’s publishing world, works are often confined to narrowly defined venues, governed by editorial boards whose expertise is never entirely free from an ideology. To escape these strictures, many have resorted to the self-promoting spaces of blogs, vanity presses, and podcasts.
Unlike existing archives that depend upon university consortia, military, commercial, and scientific foundations, ΣΤΟΙΧΕΙΟΝ is built upon the contributions and commitments of those who have constructed and use it.
Why not just publish on arXiv?
The aim is to build a more expansive archive where contributors can publish works in progress and share them with others in an agora that does not require participants to belong to, or be affiliated with, a scientific community in order to be endorsed (See author guidelines and endorsement protocol) We are also committed to ensuring that preprints are not restricted to the English language. For now, we accept submissions in both French and English, with additional languages to be added as the desire arises.
Site Organization
The site is organized under the general category of ΣΤΟΙΧΕΙΟΝ, which, depending on the participant's reading, can determine diverse fields ranging from a letter (literature/linguistics/psychoanalysis), atom/wave (physics), element (mathematics), principle (logic), trait (art), quibit (computer science), etc.
To orient this heterogeneous field, a vectorial approach has been taken to determine the dominant direction of the site. Only those categories with the most preprints will be listed at the top of the page, but additional categories will be listed once more preprints are submitted to the archive.
As of the initial launch (Sept. 2025), the vectorization of the site has resulted in four major categories: mathematics, logic, linguistics, and the neutral category of ΣΤΟΙΧΕΙΑ, which serves as a placeholder for all those preprints that do not fall under the current categories. Should we receive different ΣΤΟΙΧΕΙΑ at a later date, the list will be updated to reflect this change of orientation.
Modes of submission
Four principal kinds of work are invited here.
- Brief works – articles constructing an object, theory, model, diagrams, or structure; articles developing specific problems, demonstrations, or critiques.
- Reviews – concise discussions of works already published on the site and elsewhere.
- Extended works – longer pieces that may evolve through feedback, revision, and rewriting.
- Translations – works whose circulation is essential to preserving the integrity of a field.
Editorial approach
There is no fixed board of editors. The editorial function is not rejected, but rather divided into two distinct instances: moderators safeguard the transmissibility, while authors who have contributed to the site act as endorsers, shaping the veracity and integrity of the archive. (See author guidelines and endorsement protocols)
Only for the launch of the site, will the moderators also be responsible for endorsing those submitting work to the site. Once the site grows, it is anticipated that these two instances will separate: the initial moderators will be replaced to make room for a new collective, while endorsement will become a separate instance conferred to any author who has established a presence on the site.
